Kubuntu 8.10 upgrade (KDE 4.1) on Thinkpad T61
I have been looking forward to upgrading to see all the fancy stuff kde 4.1 has to offer but I have to say that I was disappointed with the results
The machine in question is Thinkpad T61 with intel graphics and 2GB memory. The upgrade was from Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10.
Goods..
- Nice graphics
Downs..
- Slow performance overall.
- Dual head configuration didn’t work (kwin crashes with
--right-of) - Didn’t like the new menu system
So this meant I had to go back to Fluxbox wm. Lightweight and customizable - Exactly what I need. I do prefer a fast stable window manager that doesn’t feel sluggish.
My original intentions, when I switched to KDE (Kubuntu 8.04), were adopting to something without too much customization - get used to it out of the box. I have to admit that I failed doing so (for now). After all the configuration of Fluxbox isn’t that complicated…
